History of the Blue Angels (1946-Present)

The Blue Angels, originally known as The U.S. Naval Flight Demonstration Squadron (USNFDS), have been a commanding presence in the history of military flight.

Ever since the Blue Angels' establishment in 1946, this amazing aerodynamic team of fighter planes has gone through a transformation from flying the F6F Hellcat (1946), F8F Bearcat (f47-e48), F9F-2 Panther (e49-e50), F9F-5 Cougar (f51-e56), F11F Tiger (e57-e68), F4 Phantom II (f69-e73), A-4 Skyhawk (f74-e85), to the F/A-18 Hornet (f86-Present). The Blue Angels are the world's first and oldest currently-flying aerobatics team.

On April 24, 1946 Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Chester Nimitz issued an order for the establishment of a flight exhibition squad to improve Navy morale and increase public awareness of Navy flight capabilities. This team of pilots (all of whom were veteran WWII fighter aces) spent many hours building their technical maneuvers for the team's first demonstration on May 10, 1946. Soon the team (originally called USNFDS) became known globally for its impressive aerobatic stunts.

On July 19, 1947 The U.S. Naval Flight Demonstration Squadron officially changed its signature name to The Blue Angels, after one of the team members spotted an advertisement for the Blue Angel nightclub in New York City. The squadron also painted their planes blue with gold trim.

Throughout the 60 plus years the Blue Angels have been flying, there have been various additions to the squadron. There are now six official F/A-18 Hornets as part of the Blue Angel demonstration squad (the Diamond: Blue Angels jets 1 through 4 and the Opposing Solos: Blue Angels jets 5 and 6). The Blue Angels have over 35 routines that they have perfected. And of course, the US Marines C-130 cargo aircraft, Fat Albert, has also joined the team to help get equipment and personnel from show location to show location, and Fat Albert also performs to rave reviews on its own.

Currently, the Blue Angel pilots perform approximately 30 maneuvers during their air demonstrations, with the typical air show lasting around an hour and fifteen minutes from very start to finish.

The Blue Angels have had many successes in their history, and as of 2010, celebrate the flying of the F/A-18 Hornet in air shows for 24 years.

Each season, more than 15 million spectators watch the Blue Angels perform. Since its creation in 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for more than 450 million fans.
